Ricky U12 stun Shenley U12
last wicket win so vital
Amid astonishing scenes at the Shenley Cricket Centre, Rickmansworth U13's pulled off a stunning last gasp win to put their push for the County Quarter Finals back on track.
It all started so well, with Tahir and Bilal both getting early wickets and bowling tightly to keep hot favourites Shenley, with their array of County and Area boys, down to 9/2 after the first 5 overs. And by the time Iwan and Rohan had completed their spells, SVCC were just 33/2 at the halfway stage. The Ricky boys were fielding like demons, but the boundaries were short, and when the Shenley boys cut loose they started to really make an impact. Eesa and Rishi were the unlucky ones to feel the full force of the Shenley fightback as Max hit 30 runs and William 24. By keeping wickets intact, Radlett had more than doubled their score to 77/3 with 5 overs left to go, and it was only the tight bowling of Tahir (2-8) and Bilal (2-6) that kept the score just into triple figures.
Scoring over 100, at 5 an over, was a tall order, with Ricky fielding a number of boys making their League debuts for the club. Failure to do so would have eliminated Ricky from the league even at this early stage. So it was do or die.
Eesa was unlucky to be run out trying to steal a bye, but Joe batted pluckily, and Tahir used his long levers to crash the ball around at an alarming rate. Ofter 5 overs Ricky were 35/1 and well in contention, however Tahir took a risk too many and was stumped for 19, and Bilal lost his leg stump just 2 balls later. In the next over Joe was bowled by Max for 10 and Ricky were up against it at 36/4.
However not for the first time this year, Harvey strode to the crease in a confident manner and deposited his first ball for 4 to mid wicket. Initially with Ollie H (1) playing a supporting role and then Christian, Harvey was able to keep the score rattling along and when he hit 4 boundaries in 5 balls off opposing Captain Oli W, he had to retire on 32* but with Ricky back in the driving seat, needing just 10 to win.
Christian then took over with some good running between the wickets, but first Rishi, and the Louis and Rohan succumbed to some amazing bowling by Shenley's finest. Max bowled 3 consecutive wicket maidens, and Ollie took 2 wickets in 3 balls, to leave Ricky needing 3 to win when last boy Iwan strode to the crease. By now most parents were standing up and looked more nervous than the boys. However Iwan kept out the last ball of that over, and then after a little look at the next ball, Christian powered the ball through the off side for a match winning boundary, and a personal tally of 15*, as the Ricky boys celebrated on the sidelines.
Tahir and Bilal both bowled well and Christian took 2 vital catches. Whilst Tahir and Harvey both batted at a class above. But the MOM goes to Christian for his calmness in seeing the team home to victory and his all round infectious enthusiasm in the field. A winning smile is always the best type
