It was another highly encouraging weekend for Rickmansworth Cricket Club, with strong performances across the senior sides producing almost a clean sweep of victories and plenty of standout individual displays. From disciplined bowling spells to composed run chases, the club enjoyed one of its most successful weekends of the early season.
The headline result came from the 1st XI, who travelled to Hemel Hempstead Town and secured an emphatic seven-wicket win after a ruthless bowling performance. Hemel were dismissed for just 105 in 30 overs as Rickmansworth’s attack maintained relentless pressure throughout the innings. From Billy at the top of the order ripping out the cream of the batting, to Harvey’s discipline in the middle going at 2 an over and taking out 2 victims, to Aman with an amazing hat-trick to destroy any hope of a fightback, the Ricky bowlers were flawless in their execution.
The chase was handled calmly and professionally, with Rickmansworth reaching 109 for 3 inside 24 overs to continue their impressive start to life in Division 3A and reach the top of the table . The victory never truly looked in doubt once young Herts batter Jeevan crafted a confident 44 to lay the foundations and the clinical nature of the performances by Matt and Vivek to secure victory underlined the growing confidence within the side.
The 2nd XI also enjoyed a valuable victory against Hemel which exposed the facilities of the batting but underlined the strength of bowling Shiv has at his disposal. From 85/1 and 118/2, Ricky collapsed once the ball got softer and dependable Bobby was out for 60. Only Sneehan and James L reached double figures as Ricky limped to 163 and still left 4 overs on the field.
With a bowling attack that would grace the 1st Xi, Hemel were at once 7-4 and then 21-6. Tom Bev (6-19) and James L (3-16) made sure Ricky didn’t have to toil for too long in the hot sun and whilst HHTC rallied to 102-6, once Charlie had taken Barnard out it was a procession to 110 all out. Ricky 2nd were just one run last week away from being 3/3 and top of the tree.
Perhaps the grittiest display of the afternoon came from the 3rd XI, who defeated Northwood by 26 runs after defending a modest total of 131 for 9. On a surface offering assistance to the bowlers, Rickmansworth’s innings was built around at good start from Gaurav (26) and Snehal (24) and some determination rather than fluency, with valuable lower-order contributions from Vishal and Nikhil proving crucial. In response, Northwood never settled against an energetic Rickmansworth attack and after reaching 73-2 in 20 turgid overs, were bowled out for 105 in 36.5 overs when the fight-back never materialised. Gaurav and Hassan shared 7 wickets between them as accuracy proved key to success. It was precisely the type of hard-earned team performance captains relish during a long league campaign.
The final win of the day came at the Guild where an entertaining contest belonged to the 5th XI, who overcame Langleybury by 40 runs in a high-scoring encounter. Rickmansworth posted an aggressive 241 all out from just 33.1 overs, setting the tone with positive strokeplay from the outset. Paul (86) on his return to the playing ranks and Vijay (41) put on 113 for the first wicket and at 224/4 Ricky would have hoped to post a few more but fell away to 241.
Langleybury responded gamely and finished on 201 for 8, but the hosts always appeared to have enough runs in hand thanks to regular breakthroughs at key moments. Hassan G and Vikram P picked up 5 wickets between them. The match showcased the depth within the club, with several players making meaningful contributions in both disciplines.
The 4th team continue to struggle in Div10 with ChipperDon 2nds (who 30 years ago were the equivalent of our 1st team standard) racking up 269/6 on a hot afternoon. Despite a resilient 35 by Aman B, the last 5 wickets could only muster 33 runs and a total of 115 was a disappointing outcome.
With four senior victories recorded on the same Saturday, optimism is beginning to build around Park Road. Early-season momentum can quickly define a campaign, and Rickmansworth’s blend of disciplined bowling, resilient batting and strong team spirit is already proving difficult for opponents to handle. If Saturday’s results are any indication, the club could be set for a memorable summer.
The 5th victory of the weekend came at home in the Chess Valley League against Old Albanians. Billy, Nikhil and Nayan grabbed 2 wickets each as OA’s struggled against our superior fire-power. Once Paul had scored the run needed to make him the all-time top runscorer for RCC, Harvey (28) and Yash (55) took the game away from the St Albans club and Ricky coasted past the target of 134 with wickets and overs in hand.
