It is with profound sadness that Rickmansworth Cricket Club announces the passing of our beloved friend, committee member, and teammate, Doug, on 22nd December, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Doug was the soul of our club. To know him was to know a man of unwavering positivity and kindness; someone whom it was impossible to have a negative feeling towards. His warmth and friendship touched us all and of which we all have a story.
In just two years as part of the cricket committee, Doug achieved what many would have thought impossible. Through sheer determination and commitment, he single-handedly secured grants that will fund vital improvements to our facilities, including new drainage, new changing rooms, and cricket nets, ensuring a strong future for the club for generations to come.
On the playing side of things, Doug helped secure back-to-back promotions for our 3rd XI, with a high score of 94 not out. His fighting spirit was as evident on the pitch as it was in his final battle off the field.
A true local hero, Doug’s courage extended far beyond the boundary. He was a true friend on and off the field. If you had a bad game, Doug would make you look forward to having another go the week after. If you had a good game, he would make you feel like you had an even better game. Those who were lucky enough to share the middle with him will attest to the privilege of sharing a partnership.
Doug possessed a sense of humour capable of lifting spirits and making us laugh in any situation - good, bad or indifferent. If there was one person who would make you feel better, it was him.
Dougy,
We will miss you more than words can say. You are a true Ricky legend, true cricketer and an even better man.
You always used to say, it's alright mate, 'its gonna be fine' at the moment we are struggling to see beyond our grief but we know your memory will live forevermore.
Our thoughts go out to you and your family. Your amazing wife and two children who have lost a devoted husband, father and friend.
Rest in Peace, Dougy.
Gone but Never Ever Forgotten.
