2nds live to fight another year

The 14th May 2022 may not stand out in many people's memories but it is significant as it was the last time that Paul and Ubaid betted together for the 2nd team, in a game where John Smith took 4 wickets. Fast forward 15 months and here we are again, though this time a Division higher and Smithy is back taking 4 wickets again. And Paul and Ubaid are in the middle, together.

At this point Ricky 2nds are 57/1 and looking well set in the pursuit of 110 and the 1 point needed to guarantee staying in the Division for another year. Jeevan had earlier been bowled for 15. But then, Ubaid is out LBW, Paul is out for 29 and Stefan and Manpreet depart without adding a run. Now it is 67/5 and 110 looks as far away as a conservative victory at the next general election. Once again, Ali Nawaz came to the rescue with some big hitting that took the score over 100, with a little support from Waheed (17). Safraz and Callum chipped in and Ricky were wracking up the batting points (2) when the final wicket fell, with Smithy attempting a heave for 6 to square leg that ended up in the the gloves of the keeper.

With only 110 defend, after the rain had deducted overs, Ricky had to work hard and did remarkably well. Saffie and Waheed kept it tight and the John weaved his magic taking 4-13. With Watton on 64/6, the game hung in the balance, but old campaigner Brad came to the wicket and saw his team home with his customary walking across the stumps and flicking the ball to fine leg. He didnt miss one, so Watton were home and dry (well - maybe not so dry...) with overs to spare.

Ricky picked up 8 good points and can look forward to a relaxing game next Saturday against Greenwood Park.
